I’m sure I’m not the first to say this, but from the conversations that we’re having with organisations ranging from global businesses, including big Pharmaceuticals, to trade associations, to charities, it is becoming increasingly clear that there are going to be a number of Facebook type sites focused on specific verticals and/or topics. There will even be subsets of sites within each vertical, for example sites for training, others for research, and so on.
Facebook itself is unlikely to be the answer to this, they are very focused on the social side, and the needs of business social networking are very different (a lot more focus on collaborative working, for example).
There won’t be one dominant supplier, there’ll be lots of different sites all over the place. Success will be determined by how well each of these sites adds value to their particular vertical user base, and each will all have there own nuances, and specific features focused on their different niches needs. Industry knowledge, and the ability to adapt the technology quickly as the community develops will be the critical success factors.
We are finding that we can build any type of social network using Frog, particularly business / education focused systems, that can look like anything we want, and can pretty much do anything we want, from start to finish within a matter of days or low weeks, and this has got me thinking…
